This past weekend I was in Los Angeles for the Mark Bryan opening at Carlotta’s Passion in Eagle Rock. The opening was a lot of fun, with lots of interesting people in attendance and the gallery walls covered with Mark’s fantastic imagery. The painting I bought, Mona and the Metal Men, garnered quite a bit of attention and seemed to be one of the cornerstone pieces. Apparently, the folks at Pasadena Weekly thought so too, and decided to put the painting on the cover of this week’s new issue. Mona now joins the likes of pieces from Ana Bagayan, Mark Ryden and the Clayton Brothers, as art work from my collection that has appeared on the cover of a magazine.

While you’re all here, take a look at some photos from the opening reception:

The richness of these paintings have to be seen to be believed, so I highly recommend a trip to the gallery for an in person peek.

Above is a video sculpture installation titled The Screaming Bunny Songs. The bunny performs a three piece dramatic reading… and sings!

Here’s another shot of the gallery on opening night with Mona and the Metal Men displayed on the back wall.

The centerpiece of the exhibit is Bryan’s tour d’ force of political commentary, The Mad Tea Party, that seems to be one part Alice In Wonderland, one part Da Vinci’s Last Supper, and one part a meeting of the Bush administration. Ripe with biting satire and clever symbolism— and exceptionally well painted! Standing in front are a couple of locals (and avid art collectors), Dawn and Mike Roznowski.

By the way, prints of many of Mark Bryan’s paintings (including Mona and the Metal Men) are available on his website. Enjoy!
